So I’ve never been a huge X-Men fan in terms of the comics and cartoons, it all seems so complicated with various incarnations and spin-offs, and the earlier set of films were a good example of the law of diminishing returns; liked the first one but steadily downhill from there despite a brilliant cast.

X-MenFirstClassMoviePosterHowever, the cast of X-Men: First Class was really intriguing; I have admired James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence and it’s always interesting to see what such actors do with genre material.  Plus the attraction of Kevin Bacon chewing the scenery as chief baddie always worth a look.

But what does IMDB say about this movie?

In 1962, the United States government enlists the help of Mutants with superhuman abilities to stop a malicious dictator who is determined to start World War III.

Fair enough.

I enjoyed this quite a lot, the story was your typical origin thing, mutants identified but don’t know others exist and are brought together by government agency to be used for their own purposes but things don’t work out exactly as intended and personal issues get in the way so team splits setting everything up for the sequel. Still for all that it was great fun, performances were good, special effects excellent and it delivered its aim.

I will look forward to the sequel although it sounds a bit like a cast of thousands and how all of those actors are wrangled in terms of screen time will be interesting to watch.

Still confused about continuity and what’s canonical and that’s without bringing the Wolverine films into the mix. But hey, I may get there one day!
